Chafyn Grove Pupil awarded GCSE in Greek
September 26, 2007 on 2:31 pm | In Wiltshire
Former Chafyn Grove pupil, Aurelia Hibbert, has passed a GCSE in Greek at the age of 11!
Aurelia, who left Chafyn Grove in July this year, had started to learn Greek from scratch only 2 years ago. She began studying towards a GCSE in January this year and was awarded an A* in Greek after sitting the exam in June. Greek is renowned as one of the most difficult subjects to pass at GCSE and Classics Teacher, Andy Mackay said, “Aurelia is the cleverest pupil I have ever taught”.
Aurelia, who also gained a Scholarship to Canford, is the second pupil to pass a GCSE whilst at Chafyn Grove; Amy Davis-Poynter has previously passed a GCSE in Latin.
Word Count: 116More Engineering Success for RGSAO Pupils
September 25, 2007 on 11:36 am | In Worcestershire
At the National Final of the Young Engineers competition held at the Old Naval College, Greenwich two RGSAO pupils were again successful.
Robert Tipton and Joseph Perry obtained the ward for Best Craftsmanship and engineering. At only 14 years old they were in competition with many A Level students and it was a fantastic achievement for them to obtain such an award.
They each received a cheque for £200 and a £400 prize was also given to the Design & Technology Department at RGSAO.
Mr Cotterill, Head of D&T is extremely proud of the two pupils and expects them to win even more awards as they progress through the School. “They are both very gifted and talented in the field” said Mr Cotterill.
RGSAO was formed by the merger, on September 1st 2007, of the Royal Grammar School Worcester and Alice Ottley School. The school has 940 girls and boys aged between 11 and 18 years of age and a first-class site in the heart of Worcester, which includes extensive sports facilities and specialist teaching rooms. The school aims to offer a balanced and challenging education, which will stand pupils in good stead in their future careers and within the community at large.

September 13, 2007 on 4:22 pm | In Berkshire
Bearwood College is delighted to announce that from September 2007 we will be starting a Year 3 class for aged 7. This precedes the formal opening of a new Prep School in September 2008 when there will be a Year 3 and 4 class.
The Prep School will provide a sound education and a wide range of extra-curricular activities for boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 11. This facility completes Bearwood’s progressive development over the last four years into a ‘through-school’, offering care and education to children from 3 months to 18 years.
Located on the stunning 250 acre site, the Prep School will occupy Jellicoe House; a welcoming learning environment with small class sizes in an attractive setting. It is walking distance from the Mansion House where the Senior School is based but link-attached to the Nursery and Pre-Prep building which can be helpful for younger pupils in facilitating the transition to more formal Prep education. All Prep School pupils will enjoy full access to the more advanced resources situated in the Senior School buildings such as the Swimming Pool, Theatre and Science Laboratories.
For September 2007 two qualified teachers for this new class have been recruited and we look forward to welcoming all new joiners in the forthcoming academic year.
If you would like any further information about Bearwood College Prep School please contact Mrs Diane Birch, Registrar on 0118 974 8300 or email registrar@bearwoodcollege.co.uk.
Word Count: 229RGS WORCESTER rowers end season on a high
September 7, 2007 on 9:51 am | In 2009/2010-SPORT, Worcestershire
The Royal Grammar School (RGS) Worcester had a highly successful time at the National Rowing Championships recently, coming away with a Silver and a Bronze from four events entered.
With grim weather lashing the country, the competitors had to make three trips to Nottingham through the floods and traffic, but their perseverance was rewarded. Zoe Thompson, competing in WJ16 Single Sculls showed good pace in the time trial to qualify for the final, whilst the newly formed Coxed Four (Chris Horner, Ben Kell, Simon Goldrick, Tom Clark, cox James Higginbottom) in J18 Fours displayed a lack of race experience together, and were one of the slowest boats in qualifying, which meant they started the final as outsiders in an outside lane.
Zoe Sunday Final began well as she threw down the gauntlet to the favourites from Durham and Canford to take an early lead. The Durham sculler came through strongly to take the lead at half way, but Zoe ever relinquished 2nd place, eventually beating the Bronze medallist by six seconds. The medal was a triumph also for Zoe coach Paul Sterckx, who could not be there for the race as he is preparing to accompany another of his proteges, Sarah Cowburn of Worcester Rowing Club to China for the World Championships.
The much anticipated Coxed Fours final was one of the last races of the weekend, and the RGS crew were not so quick off the start: in the first 1000 metres they were mainly 4th and at times 5th, as the time trial had suggested they would be. But with the lead changing hands in front of them, Tom Clark in the stroke seat, in his last race for the School, mounted a huge challenge with 500 metres to go, and they pulled back a 5 second deficit on Hampton in 3rd place; with 150 metres left they overhauled their rivals, and took a further 5 seconds out of them before the line.
The achievements of both Zoe and the Four are all the more impressive given that the boats that beat them were all selected England and Wales boats for the Home Countries International.
