The Right Chemistry – Worcester School’s success in national Chemistry competition

March 12, 2008 on 4:14 pm | In Worcestershire

In a competition designed to test the most able Year 13 chemistry students in the country, RGSAO entered pupils from both Years 12 and 13. The Year 12 pupils enjoyed an enriched curriculum in order to enter the competition a year early.

Of the Year 12 pupils, 3 were awarded commendations, two received Bronze Awards (Sarah Higgs and Susan Ford), one a Silver Award (Evgeny Kokorev) and Peter Bullock was awarded Gold. This places him in the top 166 Chemists in the country!

Of the Year 13 pupils who entered, Andrew James and Charles Greenway were awarded Bronze Awards, Christopher Bellamy a Silver Award, whilst Robert Kaner, Thomas Crane and Daniel Scott achieved Gold Awards.

Daniel Scott has been invited to attend Round 2, where the top 23 Chemists battle it out for a chance to represent the UK in the International Olympaid, which is to be held in Hungary this year.

The medal tally, that of 4 Bronze, 2 Silver and 4 Gold, represents the best results in the department’s history, and would rival any of the top rated Chemistry departments in the country.

It is the third successive year that a pupil from RGSAO has been invited to attend Round 2. In 2006, Joe Staines represented the UK in the International event, whilst last year Peter Ford had to decline his place, having already been selected to represent the UK for Physics.

These are tremendous results and they put RGSAO amongst the top Chemistry Departments in the country.

Padworth student, Chioma Ifeobu was delighted to receive the offer of a place at Cambridge University to read Chemical Engineering at Kings College for entry in October 2008. The offer follows a stringent entry procedure, which includes a series of written tests and a rigorous interview.

Padworth’s Higher Education Adviser, Dr Alex Mitlehner said, “Chioma is an outstanding student who performs exceptionally well in class and is a popular member of the college community. I am confident that she will be an immense asset to Cambridge University and am delighted that she has been successful in her application.”

The majority of the Year 13 students at Padworth have applied to a range of Universities through the UCAS system for entry later this year – most students have achieved good offers and are now working towards their targets in the run-up to the final A Level examinations in May/June.
