“Outstanding” Royal Alexandra and Albert School celebrates a huge increase in GCSE results.

January 28, 2009 on 10:20 am | In 2008 GCSE results, Surrey

In the last 4 years the number of pupils achieving 5 GCSEs (A*-C) including English and Maths at the School has increased by nearly 60%.

Headmaster Paul Spencer Ellis comments “58% of pupils achieve 5 GCSEs (A*-C) including English and Maths, and a remarkable 77% achieved 5 GCSEs at C and above. This is impressive given that the nature of boarding can mean that before coming to us pupils may have been to a number of schools and we are often filling gaps in their education, which can particularly affect English and Maths.”

The overall figures mask some exceptional results last year including 100% pass rate for Physics. And for the fourth year running the school is in the top 5% in England for Contextual Value Added.

Headmaster thrilled with 2008 GCSE results

September 23, 2008 on 9:50 am | In 2008 GCSE results, Cambridgeshire

The GCSE results for The Leys School in Cambridge are:
A* – A passes 65.6%
A* – C passes 98.6%
A* – E passes 100%

I am thrilled with these results, the best the School has ever achieved at GCSE, and I am sure the pupils and their parents will be as delighted as we are. This is a talented year group which has worked very hard and been superbly taught, and their sense of elation is well justified. 38% of the year gained 10 or more A*/A grades, and all our candidates can feel proud of their success. This is a clear reflection of the academic improvements which have taken place at the school in recent years.

Among those celebrating were Joseph Jackson of Clowne and Naseem Sharif from Rotherham, who both got 8 A* and 3 As. Joseph was awarded A* for Statistics last year, bringing his total to 9* and 3 As. One of the most outstanding candidates this year was Maria Navarro Fraile from Malaga: she only joined the school in Year 11, as a boarder from Spain, but managed to gain 2 A*, 3 As and 2 Bs. One of her top marks, not surprisingly, was for Spanish, but she also managed to gain an A* in French. “When we remember that she was sitting this exam in a foreign language to start with, she really did do well, especially as she only studied for GCSEs for a year,” said Mrs Maxine Smith, Director of Studies at the College.

There were also successes for younger pupils at the school, who sat Statistics in Rudiments (year 9). James Kulmer, Isaac McDonald, Amer Qaiyum and Alex Simpson all achieved As.

“Our GCSEs buck the national trend away from academically challenging subjects and show what can be achieved by motivated pupils, first-rate passionate teachers and supportive parents. The results are all the more remarkable when you consider how much these students have also achieved beyond the classroom in sport, drama, music and adventurous outdoor pursuits,” added Andy Rattue.

“I look forward to welcoming these successful pupils back to the school as part of our sixth form and also opening our doors to the many new faces joining us from other schools around the region.”

GCSE results at Rossall School, Fleetwood have risen to an eight year high, with many pupils achieving A* or A grade passes across the subject spectrum.

Rossall’s A* – C grades are up 2.5% on 2007 at 93.5%, whilst the overall A* – G pass rate of 99.7% has been maintained. Also up on last year is the number of pupils gaining A* and A grades: a total of 45%, compared to 44% in 2007. This makes it a very successful year for one of the area’s oldest independent schools and follows equally impressive A-level figures.

Three local 16-year-old pupils achieved A* or A grades in all subjects. Olivia Airey of Stanley Park, Blackpool bagged eight A* and one A, whilst Cleveleys youngsters, Nicola Blythe and Laura Howarth also joined the ‘A Team’ with five A* and four A’s and three A* and seven A’s respectively.

Commenting on the results, Rossall’s first deputy headmaster, Fergus Livingstone said: “Our overall pass rate of 99.7% is very pleasing, but more impressive is the number of pupils achieving A* or A grades in core subjects, which also shows an increase year on year. This is testament to their hard work and is extremely encouraging for a school such as ours, which unlike many schools in the independent sector, operates an open entry policy and allows all pupils, whatever their abilities, to sit the subjects of their choice.

2008 – The Year of the Scientist!

September 5, 2008 on 9:21 am | In 2008 GCSE results, Hertfordshire

Students at The Princess Helena College have again excelled in their GCSE examinations. For the third year running, Science results have been outstanding; all girls studying the individual science subjects were awarded an A* – B grade.

The School is particularly pleased that pupils excelled in a wide range of traditional and so-called ‘modern’ subjects. This is very much a reflection of the College’s ethos of offering a flexible approach to education, tailoring the curriculum and extracurricular activities to enable each girl to develop her talents and to succeed.

On the one hand, Science at PHC is continuing to grow in strength and in each successive year since the Science Centre was built, the results have excelled. There was a 100% pass rate A*-A grade in Chemistry, 100% pass rate A*-B in Biology & Physics. At the same time, girls studying Sport Science were all awarded A*- B grades and we were delighted that pupils taking our newest GCSE, Dance, were all awarded B grades.

Deputy Head, Camilla Wilson, believes that “where possible, girls should be given the opportunity to study subjects they enjoy and for which they have a particular aptitude. It is fantastic that girls have got A*s in such a wide variety of subjects including Latin, Sport Science, History and Business Studies. We are constantly looking to improve our curriculum, ensuring it suits the needs of each year group and we now offer over 20 different subjects.”

Overall Summary
• For the fifth year running nearly half of all GCSE’s taken were awarded an A* or A grade.
• For the second year, three quarters of all GCSE’s taken were passed at A* to B grade.
• We are delighted with all the girls’ results from those who got a string of A*s and As – including Julia Bevan, Isabelle Milton and Rachel Prosser – to those who got a mix of As, Bs and Cs – all of whom maximized their potential.
• For an impressive third year running there was a 100% pass rate A*-A grade in Chemistry and 100% pass rate A*-B in Biology & Physics.
• 100% pass rate A*-B in Religious Studies, Latin and Dance.
• 80% of all girls who took Music GCSE were awarded an A Grade.
• For the second year there was a 100% pass rate A*-B in Sports Science
• 100% pass rate A*-C in French, German, History & Business Studies.

Bearwood pupil amongst top ten in the country

Bearwood College’s strong GCSE results

Bearwood College’s GCSE pupils have achieved a spectacular set of results this year, with 90% of entries gaining a Grade C or above, five points up on last year. 31% of entries are at Grade A* or A.

Other highs include 81% of candidates gaining 5 GCSE’s, including Maths and English, at Grade C or above – a four point increase on last year. The Single Science subject results were outstanding with many students choosing to continue studying Biology, Chemistry and Physics at A Level. The Bearwood College results overall are substantially up on the previous five year average, and are well above the national average.

Mr Ian Smith, Academic Deputy, commented: “Excellent results are the reward for the commitment and diligence from all our pupils, staff and parents. Over three years, since inspection, GCSE’s per candidate at A*- C have risen from 72% to 90%.”

Bearwood is very proud of local pupil Matthew Bell. He was amongst the top ten students according to Edexcel, the UK’s largest awarding body. Matthew sat the Physical Education exam earlier this summer and the results, issued today, show that out of 70,000 candidates, he achieved one of the highest overall marks.

Stephen Aiano, Headmaster, said: “This is a tremendous achievement and testament to the hard work pupils put into preparing for their exams. We are very proud with this outstanding achievement.” Matthew achieved top grades across all of his nine subjects, said: “I am absolutely thrilled with what I have been able to achieve. I am now really looking forward to embarking on my AS and A2 Levels at Bearwood College.”

He continues: “All our Year 11 students and all the staff have put in some serious work throughout the GCSE course, and are suitably rewarded. I am really pleased for them. These results are part of a long-term trend of continuing academic improvement at Bearwood. This process continues to be taken forward by Mr George Penlington, the College’s new Academic Deputy Head. We are especially pleased with our strong ‘value addition’ which has resulted, on average, in every GCSE subject entry scoring marks over half a grade above expectation.”

Pupils have an exciting range of 23 A Level subjects to choose from, with Environmental Science and Photography being examples of the varied subjects Bearwood College’s Sixth Form has to offer. Small class sizes guarantee individual attention and the Sierra Club, is a purpose-built Sixth Form centre facility designed to promote independent study as well as offer a social space for relaxation. These elements contribute to the strength of Bearwood’s unique support system which can make all the difference to pupils managing the pressures of A Level study. Whilst ensuring academic issues are thoroughly addressed, Bearwood also helps prepare well-rounded individuals, ready for university and life beyond.
