St Cedd’s School, Chelmsford, won the Gosfield Junior Maths Challenge for the first time with a record-breaking score of 904 – over a hundred marks ahead of the rest of the field!
Fifteen schools from all over the county assembled at Gosfield to take part in this annual test of mathematics knowledge and flair. Not called a ‘challenge’ lightly, this day long test of concentration and ability comprised three parts: a maths trail, an eight part task and team problem solving exercise against the clock. As well as mathematical capability, teams were required to demonstrate excellent calculation, spacial awareness, numeracy, mental arithmetic, initiative and teamworking skills, as well as the ability to work quickly under pressure. Sophie remarked about the tasks, ‘Some of them were excruciatingly difficult and others were fun!’
The team consisting of Rebecca Coughlan, Sophie Roche, Kapil Pau and Michael Clesham, were delighted with their winnings, which included certificates, shields, store vouchers and a ‘Murderous Maths’ book for the school library.

Future is secured for leading local preparatory school

The future of a leading local preparatory school has been secured, following several months of uncertainty. St Philip’s Priory School in New London Road, Chelmsford, will come under the ownership of St Cedd’s School Educational Trust which is currently responsible for another leading local school based in Maltese Road, Chelmsford.
‘For at least the next academic year there will be little change and the two schools will continue to operate on their separate sites,’ said St Cedd’s Chair of Governors, Leo Bartle. ‘The longer term aim is that, in consultation with parents and staff and operating under the name of St Cedd’s, a combined school will be developed, building on the best traditions and the shared ethos of both these excellent schools.’
Sr Rachel O’Riordan, Chair of Trustees for St Philip’s Priory, welcomed the joining of the two schools saying that The Trustees and Staff of St Philip’s Priory had worked very hard with advisors and with St Cedd’s to reach a point where they could be assured that their much-loved school would continue to thrive.
‘We wish the Trustees, Staff Parents & Pupils of the combined school all the very best for the future,’ she said.
