German Partner School Visit
April 20, 2009 on 12:49 pm | In Leicestershire

In March LHS hosted a group of students from the Gymnasium am Stefansberg in the Saarland. It was a wonderful opportunity for some of the pen friends to be able to meet each other at last and also to make new friendships. Our girls saw a variety of impressive presentations on life in a German school, a play they had written and filmed and also the popular group Tokio Hotel. In return we showed them a DVD of LHS which the Year 11 German group had made a couple of weeks’ earlier. Although it was a short visit, both our pupils and the German students thoroughly enjoyed going to lessons together and learning about each others’ way of life. The pen friend link has no doubt been strengthened after this successful visit.

On Tuesday 24 February the History Department from Leicester High School went on a visit to The Beth Shalom Holocaust Memorial Centre in Nottinghamshire as part of their studies into human rights. The day involved an introduction discussion about the purpose of such centres, a tour through the extremely moving memorial gardens and visited the museum section of the centre. Finally the students listened to the personal history of a holocaust survivor, and to ask appropriate questions afterwards.
Ernst & Young

Year 11 and 12 students enjoyed a most informative day at Ernst & Young’s More London Place offices as guests of LHS parent, Vijay Thakrar. Opportunities in the business world, details of the Ernst & Young degree, discussions on diversity and inclusiveness and a quiz and interactive session fully occupied and entertained. Informal networking with graduates who had recently joined the firm was enjoyed over a buffet lunch with stunning views over the river to the Tower of London and Tower Bridge from the ceiling to floor glass of the 9th floor. The afternoon was spent visiting the LSE where students toured the university before returning to Leicester, many inspired to pursue a business career.
New building plans at Leicester High School
April 28, 2008 on 2:16 pm | In Leicestershire
New plans to demolish parts of the school to make way for a newly built state-of-the art suite of laboratories and classrooms were unveiled at a meeting for parents on 3 September last year. The plans had already been shown to residents of nearby properties during the summer. The Leicester City Planning Department considered the plans, taking account of professional advice and the views of nearby residents and parents of girls at the school, and on 18 March gave approval for the scheme to go ahead. The first buildings will enhance the facilities of the school, especially in Science and ICT. There will not be an increase in the number of pupils using the site as this is limited by an agreement which forms part of a previous planning permission between the City Council and the Governors.
