For Oswestry School CCF cadets Hana Foggin, Becky Long and Simon Bas, their 24 hour exercise reached a high spot when they were given a helicopter flight from Nesscliffe to the school.

70 members of the school’s Combined Cadet Force took part in team exercises and training activities at the Nesscliffe Training Centre. These included climbing and target practice, night exercises and a company level attack on enemy positions.

In addition, the commander of the nearby Defence Helicopter Flying School at RAF Shawbury, Lt Cdr Mark Scott, brought a Squirrel training aircraft for the cadets to look at as he explained the role of the flying school and how to become a pilot.

During the exercise the CCF underwent its biennial inspection from Col Potter of 143 Brigade.
Col Potter said that he was most encouraged by the personal and team qualities and the keenness of the cadets, who all demonstrated enthusiasm for the cadet force and the opportunities it provides.

Cadets Hana, Becky and Simon were judged to have shown the greatest skill and initiative during the training exercise. Their reward was to be flown back to school in the helicopter by Lt Cdr Scott, with Becky being allowed to take control of the aircraft for part of the flight.

Year 4 pupils from Oswestry School Bellan House enjoyed a taste of Tudor life at Chirk Castle.

Dressed in authentic costume, members of the National Trust Education Team gave the children a fascinating experience of life in Tudor times, based on the history of the Myddelton family who bought the castle in 1595.

“It was an excellent day,” said Mrs Jackie Greatorex, the Headmistress of Bellan House. “The pupils all enjoyed their visit and were helped to understand what it was like to live in the sixteenth century, as well as learning more about our local history.”

Philip Black Visits Oswestry School

May 12, 2008 on 2:04 pm | In Shropshire

Oswestry 08 philip black web.pngPhilip Black, the Director of Legacies at the Institute of Cancer Research, visited Oswestry School on Monday 28th April. He spoke at the school assembly before taking part in a Sixth Form science lesson.

Introducing the work of the Institute of Cancer Research, which celebrates its centenary next year, Mr Black explained that 1 in 3 people will experience cancer during their lifetime, either in themselves, their family or friends. There is one cancer related death every three minutes in the UK, with 270,000 new cases each year. The most common forms are breast (in women) and prostate cancer (in men) but there are over 200 different forms of human cancer.

Cancer is caused by malfunctioning genes. The Institute is the world leader in research into cancer genetics and was the first organisation in the world to highlight the fact that cancer has a genetic cause and is not the result of protein damage. Working in conjunction with its sister hospital, the Royal Marsden, the Institute also leads the world in radiotherapy treatment and in cancer epidemiology. Underlining the clear link between smoking and lung cancer, Mr Black strongly encouraged students not to smoke.

Stressing that 95% of the money raised by the Institute is spent on research, with only 5% being used for administration, Mr Black encouraged students to take part in The Big Stride, the sponsored 15 mile walk in which Oswestry School students will participate on July 1st, raising money for cancer research and for the LEAP School in South Africa.

London Mozart Players Visit Oswestry School

May 8, 2008 on 3:26 pm | In Shropshire

Oswestry 08 Mozart web.pngPupils in Years 5 – 9 were enthralled on Monday, when Margaret Archibald (clarinet) and Christopher Newport (horn) from the London Mozart Players visited Oswestry School.

Drawing on composers from Mozart to Mahler by way of Mel (“Cruella De Vil”) Leven, and even playing Handel on a hosepipe, Margaret and Christopher captivated their young audience as they demonstrated different musical styles and explained some of the history and development of their instruments.

Christopher described some of the drawbacks and also the delights of being a touring professional musician. Margaret, while emphasising the importance of regular practice, energetically encouraged pupils to enjoy playing an instrument.

Their infectious enthusiasm and seemingly effortless expertise stimulated a flow of questions and audience involvement. Students were given the opportunity to become the orchestral rhythm section, an aerobic chorus and to demonstrate the techniques of conducting, while some of the teachers had a ‘hats on’ involvement in a Mozart Horn Concerto.

“It was an excellent afternoon, educating and enjoyable,” said one of the audience. “It is such a tremendous opportunity for young people to interact with musicians of this quality.”

During the Easter holidays, 35 pupils from Years 9 to 12 and 4 staff members from Oswestry School travelled to the Italian Alps for a week’s winter sports.

Based in Aosta, the pupils worked hard on their skiing with several beginners achieving 3 star awards whilst the advanced skiers gained good off-piste experience with the ski school’s top instructor, many receiving the top 5 star award with distinction.

The snowboarders also did well with special mention going to Liam Chambers who, recommended by his instructor for Interski’s scholarship scheme, took part in a filmed assessment.

The pupils also enjoyed various après-ski activities, which included visits to a pizza restaurant, ice-cream parlour, bowling, disco and a presentation evening.

“It was a brilliant week, the pupils were a real pleasure to be with; they received many plaudits from rep, hotel staff, instructors for their friendliness and good behaviour.” said group leader Mrs Sue Morris, Director of Music at Oswestry School who already has plans in hand for next year’s trip!

Young musicians from Oswestry School took six 1st and six 2nd places in the Oswestry Youth Music Festival, which was held over February 28th – March 2nd, 2008.

The students, aged between 10 and 18, faced stiff competition as they performed as soloists or in duets, presenting their own choice of music. All pupils achieved merit or above, with four attaining distinctions.

Director of Music Mrs Sue Morris said, “This was a pleasing set of results, especially as some pupils were not able to attend due to clashes with other events. It was especially pleasing that three of the 6 competitors competing for the Junior Festival cup were from Oswestry School.”
